So you’ve spent the money on a large solar setup or a decent generator, but it still can’t handle the biggest energy hog in your RV—the air conditioner.

A Micro-Air soft start can dramatically reduce the startup demand of your AC, making it easier to run from an inverter or a smaller generator. For many RVers, this can be the difference between being able to run the air conditioner off-grid and having to leave it turned off.

An RV air conditioner can produce plenty of cold air, but that doesn’t necessarily mean all of that air makes it into the ductwork.

Traditional RV AC installations can allow air to escape and circulate around the plenum underneath the rooftop unit instead of being directed efficiently into the ducting. That means you’re using electricity to make cold air that never reaches the living space.

RV Airflow Systems addresses this problem by sealing and directing the airflow into the RV’s ductwork. The result can be faster cooling, improved airflow, and less wasted energy. RV Airflow Systems says its system can move up to 40% more air through the ducting.

Better airflow can also reduce noise because the air is moving through the system more efficiently.

This approach has become popular enough that Grand Design has incorporated similar airflow improvements into the factory AC systems on many newer RVs.

If your existing rooftop AC is getting old, struggling in hot weather, or simply consuming more power than you’d like, replacing the entire unit may make more sense than adding upgrades to an aging system.

The latest generation of RV air conditioners is moving away from traditional fixed-speed compressors and toward variable-speed technology.

Instead of simply turning the compressor fully on and fully off, a variable-speed system can adjust its output based on how much cooling your RV actually needs. This can provide more consistent temperatures, quieter operation, and better energy efficiency.

Two of the newest options worth considering are the Furrion Chill Cube and Coleman-Mach Everest.

The Furrion Chill Cube 18K is a new-generation 18,000-BTU variable-speed RV rooftop air conditioner designed for high-performance cooling with lower power consumption.

The Chill Cube can deliver over one ton of cooling in temperatures above 105°F while using 40% less power than traditional RV AC systems. Its variable-speed compressor continuously adjusts its output instead of repeatedly cycling between full power and off.

That makes the Chill Cube particularly interesting for RVers who spend time:

The Chill Cube also offers a Turbo Cool mode for faster cool-down, battery-saving features, and ducted and non-ducted configurations. Rather than repeatedly making a large startup demand every time the compressor cycles on, the system can ramp its output up and down as needed. The Coleman-Mach Everest VS-18 takes a similar approach with an 18,000-BTU variable-speed rooftop air conditioner.
